CokeOfMan Dec 08, 2004 09:01 AM

I just heard that this is the Ceratophrys genus, are they toads?
I always thought they were frogs.

They don't really look like the true toads in the Bufo family, the ones I have seen anyway. Not that I don't belive you, they just look odd thats all
Thanks for the reply.

If I understand what you are asking correctly, Ceratophrys (horned frogs) are members of the Leptodactylidae and the genus is Ceratophrys(see Duellman and Trueb for a good break down). So they are not toads but are a type of frog.

Bufo ceratophrys is a toad whose genus is Bufo and specific name is ceratophrys. It is not related to the hornded frogs (except by being an anuran).

Hope this helps,
Ed

I just got new info claiming that they acctually are frogs and there is a confusion between Bufo Ceratophrys and Ceratophrys species. Here is a picture of a Bufo Ceratophrys
