Beardie is Ok, I'm so happy!!!!!

tegu2002 Dec 08, 2004 11:04 AM

Hi,
I'm so glad I asked you guys for advise, my mum took my beardie to the vet at the beginning of last week. I didn't want to say anything earlier, just incase it wasn't certain. But now I can say, MY BEARDIE IS OK!!!!! Thankyou you sooooooooooo much to Kakadu and Beardie_matt, you were soooo helpful. I'm still keeping my beardies together though because they have their whole life and I have read many books which say it is ok.
When we took her to the vet, which was 30 mins away, the closest one to us. They took pictures for us of the operation. I haven't seen the pictures yet, but my mum says it was sooo cute the one where she was lying on her back with her feet in the air.
She had more than 20 eggs in her, some big, some small, they were all bad though. Some of the eggs were 22mm in diamater and her pelvis is only 19 so she wouldn't of been able to lay them anyway.
She is recouperating now, and we have to feed her through a tube because she hasn't eaten for so long and is too tired to catcht the food. She has some blue stitches up hher bellie aswell. The good thing is she is friendlier from all the attention she is getting and she get more light in her own cage with a big hot bulb.
Thankyou again for your help. Here is a picture of her, before she was pregnant. She was very dark because she was always hidding and she wasn't very friendly.

Thankyou again for all of your help.

I'm glad your beardie is going to be ok, now for some concerns. What substrate is that in the pic that you have her on? Looks like wood chips to me, if that's the case I'd get them out of there. Also, no matter what the books say, I wouldn't keep them together unless they sterilized her when they were in doing the operation and even then she needs time alone to heal before he should be with her.

The Substrate in the picture is bark chippings, which are specially for reptiles, and all the pet shops that I have been to sell them as safe to reptiles, also we keep all our 35 or so reptiles on bark and they are all healthy. She is in a cage on her own at the moment and is now sterile. We aren't stupid enough to put her straight back in with the male, if that is what you are implying, we also always take a pregnant female out of the cage to lay her eggs on her own.

Wow, 35 huh, I suppose you think that makes you an expert lol. I'm not about to get in a flame war with you over this, it was just some friendly advice, take it or leave it I don't care. Realize this though, pet stores are in it for the money not the health of your animals, I mean jesus they still sell calcisand and hot rocks how much worse can it get than those? I'm sure the bark is safe for things like snakes but I would really question it on beardies.

It sounds like you had excellent timing. Eggs can rupture internally and cause infection/death.
I do have to agree with heartmountain on the bark issue though. If your beardie would happen to ingest a chunk of it by mistake, she/they could be in big trouble.
I thought bark wasn't good for snakes? I was told it draws moisture from their skin. But, I'm not a snake person.
Sure glad she's better.
