Is my froggy brumating?

cutiepie Dec 08, 2004 11:53 AM

Hi everyone. I have a cranwell horned frog about 4 inches across. It's a male. Lately, he has not been eating as much, and whenever I peer into his tank, his eyes are usually closed, but his throat is always puffing away. I mist him daily, and he usually opens his eyes for this, then closes them again. He isn't buried, simply because we only have 1.5 inches of moss in his tank, but he does dig a good sized hole and sit in that. Does it sound like he is brumating?
Here's a baby pic of him from this past spring.

has a coating built up over his skin and eyes at all? if so he probley has or he may be getting ready to.. also make sure the tempature in your tank is above 70

I would also suggest that you get a layer of unfertilized soil or something like Bed-A-Beast underneath the moss so that he/she can bury. If the frog is still and has a thin layer/film on it it is probably brumating, like Damenta said.

I just checked today and he is definitely forming a thin layer of "skin" over his body. I am keeping him moist and the temps are about 83. Well, guess I'll save on crickets this year. This will be his first winter and my first winter with a frog, so I wasn't sure what to expect.
