Blue-Tail Sexing Input? (several photos)

dxc561 Dec 08, 2004 12:46 PM

I have what I believed to be a pair of V. doreanus, but now i'm starting to have my doubts. I think they may both be female, so i snapped a few new pictures to see what you all had to say. sorry to those of you who have read my previous posts. About my monitors; They get along great. One of the reasons i have started to doubt that i have a male is because "Edward" (the one i believed was a male)has never everted and the more i look at it's tailbase, it lookes very similiar in proportion to my female's. Edward is a little larger as well. I would apreciate any imput. This first set of photos are of what i had previously believed to be the female. What i may end up doing is purchasing another doreanus and keeping a trio, improving my chances of having one of each sex. Has anyone ever done that with these types of monitors? I believe their enclosure is large enough 96"X30"X36".

Ok so this is edward then?

The tail bases do look a bit different from those pictures. This one appearing to have a more slender tail at the base. The other seems to be wider. It possibly could be that the female is a male and the male is a female.

Once they have a little bit more size and mature it will be easier to tell. That tail base width can be misleading. My female mangrove has a wider tail base then my male mangrove. I have seen him evert so I know he is a male and she has laid eggs.

Sorry I couldn't say either way or the other with any sort of certainty. Maybe others will take that step.

Are those pictures of edward?

That blue tail is still young so hard to tell for sure. I do not see any distinct characteristics that say male. Only seeing a picture is not the same as seeing the animal in person, so I wouldn't like to say for sure either way.

Glad to hear they are still getting along and doing good.

that first post was of "Edna", the one i picked up from you. I'm still pretty sure she's a female. she's grown a little bit eats a few mice a week and crickets. do you think keeping a trio in a 8 foot long, 2.5 foot deep and 3 foot tall enclosure would be alright? also, how are your roaches doing? would i be able to pick a few up from you to get a little colony going? thanks for the reply.

I have plenty of roaches, just let me know when.

That cage may work but I would go a bit larger.
