My new Goniurosaurus luii!

tethered Dec 08, 2004 01:03 PM

Hello,

Today I recieved a 1.2 trio of Goniurosaurus luii. I put the male in his own tank, and the females in a tank together. All three were very alert and somewhat flighty. All three did the same thing when I first put them in: They stood there, heads in the air, tilted to one side, as if they were trying to gather their barings. Then, after about a minute or two, they started licking their lips and quickly made their way to their hiding areas. They're a little darker in color than I expected, but that's probably because of the stress of the trip.

The male has his own 10 gallon tank to himself right now, and the females are sharing a 10 gallon. They're each at about 75 degrees daytime, with a natural 5 - 10 degree drop at night. I don't have a humidity guage right now but I misted the enclosure with a spray bottle so that the substrate and moss in the corners are moist. There's little water droplets on the back side of the glass, but the front and sides of the glass are mostly dry (just a little fog on the bottom around the perimeter of the glass).

I'm using a bark substrate, with rounded pieces of cork bark and a ziplock container w/ a hole in it for hides. I covered the ziplock container w/ moss so its nice and dark inside, and the pieces of cork bark are rounded so they form an arch that they can climb under. They seem to like the cork bark better than the ziplock container. The two females are cuddled together under one piece of bark.

I put a cricket in each tank to see if they would eat, but they seem uninterested, which I think is normal.

I think I'm doing everything right, but I would be more than appreciative if you guys could offer your advice. I will post pictures for you guys to see, after they are less stressed...

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

I'm trying to determine what sex each of these little guys are so I can seperate them accordingly. I want to put the two females in one tank and the male in a seperate tank. Right now I'm not sure which is the male and which two are female. I tried to pick one up and he (or she?) wasn't happy at all about it. He kept squirming and biting at my wrist, so I just put him down. Should I just grab them and hold them firmly and flip them upside down? Should I wait until they're more comfortable with me handling them? How should I go about this? They're about a year old so they should be sexable, I'm just sort of uneasy about the idea of accidentally hurting them or making them drop their tails.

Thanks...

I lead them into a ziplock container with a clear bottom and inspected each of them from below. It looks like all of them have bulges and none of them have the v-shaped row of pores. One of the three has a slightly larger bulge when you look at it from the side. I'm not sure how apparent the pores should be, or if it's possible for them to not be noticable at all?

I'm guessing that these are sub-adult specimens as the hemipenile bulge in the male(s) should be clearly visible.

As for handling, you're on the right track. This specie is not regarded as handleable and they will bite, hiss and generally freak out any time you trespass in their territory. The threat posturing is particularly interesting with the arched back and tail waving.

I used a clear critter keeper for any ventral inspections and found it worked well while keeping stress to a minimum. G. luii will do best if left alone as much as possible and provided with plenty of cover and hides.
