Not eating...still

mmellott Jul 02, 2003 09:51 AM

think i found out why my bp is not eating, first off the burn he got from the uth...it's almost healed but was told since it hurts to exspand his body, he won't eat....second, two nites ago tried feeding him a black mouse, he struck, coiled, had its foot in his mouth...it got stuck when he was trying to twist it...n it cut his mouth...only found that out cuz i had him checked for mouth rot n to see if there was any other reason why he's not eating. boy he was not happy at all...was striking n hissin when i brought him back n kept it up all nite...couldn't even go past his tank without him smackin off the glass.....finally found someone around here that knows what they're doing with them. so, once the burn if completely healed, then i'll try feeding him again. does anyone have any other advice other than the bet. soaks and neosp. to try n get this healed up faster? thanks all

i've been soaking him in a mixture of benadine and water for a half hour a day...then applying a triple antibiodic cream to the burned area...it's healing up but not fast...also, i've tried what you said you did to get your's to eat...didn't work..he jus let it lay...he's about 3 ft long...i've tried everything from tiny pinkey mice to large mice, rats, even went as far as to pay 9 bux for a gerbil...nothin......

A number of years ago, I cared for a snake with a mouth injury which (for obvious reasons) didn't care to eat. One of my herp friends informed me that most of the healing a reptile does is during the shed period, and that an injured snake will sometimes go through multiple sheds in a short period of time. She was absolutely correct. The snake shed twice in three weeks without eating, then resumed feeding and was fine. I do recall that I raised the temperature a few degrees to promote the healing and used Neosporin to prevent infection. Make sure your snake has plenty of drinking water. Be patient. Good luck.
