Apparently my Leo has a new friend...

iananderson02 Dec 08, 2004 01:16 PM

The crazy cat thinks that this new enclosure was built for her basking enjoyment. I have actually caught these two "snuggling" under the basking lights. Don't worry the cat is very gentle and is declawed. Usually they dont pay eachother any mind but I have seen the Leo chasing the cat around the yard before! I havent decided what to do about this behavior, it doesnt seem to be much of a problem though. ANy chance of these two getting eachother sick? ...crazy animals...

I have a friend who keeps his desert torts in his backyard with his cats & a small dog. The cats are actually scared of his torts but the torts chase the small dog around and they are all pals.

Although I've never seen my Leos do it.. they seem to have more "class".. my redfoots are big on eating others'(???)..dung!!

I believe this is one of the main ways that "bugs" are transferred among redfoots especially. So whatever it's worth..... (outside more so)

Love those redfoot torts!

First thanks for sharing the cute pictures!

I have always heard happy stories of pet kittys and torts getting along well, both in the US and in my home country with the Chaco and Redfoot torts. On the other hand, it's not the same with dogs and I heard some horror stories.

Cat's teeth, though very sharp, are not a threat to an adult or large enough tortoise, as they cannot pierce their shells. The cat sleek moves also don't scare tortoises.

Dogs on the other hand, have larger teeth that can go through the shells and hurt the tort. Also they tend to see torts as chew toys. Also they are curious about them and move actively and fast.

My cat Michifuz and my Greek tort Toto sleep together sometimes in a boxlid full of confetti... The confetti was meant for Toto's enjoyment but Michi liked it too. He is playful and very social. Toto likes the fur and warmth of kitty so he cuddles up under the fur. I hope I can take a picture...

Since Toto was a baby Michi slept next to the terrarium and share the warmth emitted by the lamp and heat pad. Now Michi is getting to know our new baby -Tina, she is too little to play but he lays down next to her terrarium.

Once in a while we babysit my parents dog. He is a nice dog but he thinks the torts are toys or food and he wants to chew them!!! > So he is limited to the garage unless Tina and Toto are safely away with a solid closed door between them.

Anyway, cats & torts yes; dogs & torts, no, unless maybe with a very tiny dog?
