"Longevity" of sand?

esoteric Dec 08, 2004 01:37 PM

I've picked up several bags of ReptiSand for my new Uros that I was going to put them into once deworming (etc.) is done and they're more adjusted to their home. Of concern, after dropping $40 on this stuff is that it's supposed to be replaced after a year. Does anyone actually replace sand or do you just clean it? That sounds pretty rediculous...

i like repti-sand and if i had more money, i would use it too. but i change my sand out like every 6 months or so because all of my lizards are diggers and i never really know if they dug something to the bottom and i have missed it while sifting. and i would hate for something to grow and rot and make them sick so that is why i use play sand now.

I used to use play sand and now use millet. I changed out both every 2 - 3 months. The possibility of bacteria building up is kind of gruesome to me - if I lived in there, I would want *clean* clean sand, not just scooped. But of course, I was using play sand which is a MUCH smaller investment.

Well, this might be my one shot at "designer" sand and opt for play sand when the kids are bigger this year. As long as my little errors cost dollars instead of lives, I can tolerate it a bit
They're currently on birdseed like the pet store recommended, but I'd prefer they ate their greens instead of the seed after tube feeding the male for four days. They also seem to like to dig a lot so sand felt a lot more practical.

I change the sand twice a year, during spring and Fall cleaning of my house. EVERYTHING gets super cleaned then.
