SIlly question, why does my snake hiss?

waldo Dec 08, 2004 01:46 PM

I've had my adult ball for 2 weeks now and occasionaly when I hold her she hisses, sometime its really loud, sometimes it very quiet and whispery. My daugher was holding the snake last night when she hissed and it kinda scared her,she thought the snake was going to bite.I remember my last ball (over 10 years ago) also made hissing noise, why do they do it?

Its been my experience that balls hiss when they really want to be left alone or to intimidate whatever is bothering them. I believe it's recommended (as a taming method) not to put them down when they hiss, otherwise they learn that hissing will get them what they want and will continue to hiss. It's unlikely that a ball would strike if the hiss doesn't work. There's probably other reasons why they hiss too, but this is what I've heard. If you have a baby, it might just have been stressed or scared.

They hiss because it is the only way they can tell you to go away and leave them alone!
