regarding breeding season.....

peteralbrian Dec 08, 2004 01:50 PM

from what i had read before inbook and on known internet sites i was under the impression that usually the boa pair are cooled down in november and december, warmed up in january and then mated. however i have been reading more and more about breeders that are breeding the baos now, some have mated their males with 2 or more females already...

so what is the deal here? this is my first breeding season and i ave very mixed ideas. can anyone shed some light here? is this a normal thing to do or are these breeders not cooling the snakes at all.

ps. if a male i willing to eat does it mean he is not willing to breed? my male is 3 years old and 6.5feet and still eats whatever i give him.

thanks for the help

I believe it has to do with several factors first being that for alot of breeders in this country winters set in alot earlier than in the natural range of these animals .Another factor could be all the strange weather that we had this summer down in fl. im sure that the freaky weather disrupted natural weather patterns throughout the entire USA. one more factor being that all of the animals that you see being bred are bci. it has been my experience that with bci cooling is not really necessary per say, with the exception of a few stubborn males. all that is required is a decent nighttime temp drop (4 or 5 degrees should do) and a drop in daylight time(photo period) as long as you provide those I believe that 9 out of 10 bci will breed without any significant cooling. Now as for a male that eats not being willing to breed it depends on the male. my Male hypo eats every 3 weeks and breeds in between and he's already done his job with 1 female working on another , and scheduled for 1 more so I guess the only way to find out if your male will eat and breed is to place him with females and find out.
I hope this has helped you out and its a shame that you had to ask this question twice to get it answerd
