Snake breathing question?

fishkiller Dec 08, 2004 01:55 PM

Do bloods breath in through their nose and out thier mouths, that sounds right to me.But it seems when they get all huffy puffy they can blow out thier noses.Just would like to know for my own references.

I'm pretty sure they JUST breathe through their nose. Their mouth would have to be open to breath through their mouth, and the only time I know of mouth breathing in snakes is during severe respiratory infections...

Thanks for answering my question, I'm still thinking it's not just through the nose, but we'll see. Thanks again.

Please do not regard this post as scientific fact or even close, jmo and I'm terrible with names of stuff.

If you look at the roof of the mouth there is a place where the air vent (on the bottom) connects to the nostril passage (on the top). And if you have watched a snake breathe with its mouth open you can see (on the bottom of the mouth) that air moves to the lungs and the vent acts like a muscle and opens and then contracts and closes. I think what causes some the wheezing when RI is in place is air seeping in around where the air vent or tube connects to the nostril passage on the top. But anyways when the snake is hissing there is alot of air being expelled from the lungs causing the vent to be completely open and likely creating a seal around where it connects to the nostril passage. So I'm assuming its just through the nostrils, tho I suppose if there was enough pressure of the expelling air it would break the seal (assuming there is one) and air would be able to go out through the mouth.... but that would have to be alot of pressure. Not that I know what I'm talking about.. but maybee my rambling helps somehow

Well that was a good stab at it.I was thinking it was dumb question that I should know this, but seems like not to many others don't know as well.Yours sounds pretty good, it's just weird how bloods can expell a lot of air out thier nostrols when they are all huffy puffy. Also when snakes are eating I thought I've heard they breath in their nose and out their vent in their mouth this way don't suffocate.
