Newbie Questions...

Robert Dec 08, 2004 02:43 PM

Hello all...I currently have 1.1 Bearded Dragons that are housed nicely in a 4x2x2 cage with plenty of branches and room...Anyways, my male eats anything and everything all day every day but my female does not eat all too much at all...She really only eats when I take her out of her cage and feed her seperately and even when I do that she really only likes mealworms...I got the male for free as a baby because it doesn't have a tail and I recently got the female from someone local who was getting rid of her...I am just wondering why the female doesn't really eat in her cage? Is it because she is going through brumation or just because she is afraid of the male? Any and all comments will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks alot,
Robert

How old are they? If it's over 4 months get them separated immediately. You can not house males and females together, they will breed. Even if they're younger you should have a 90 day quarentine and by then they will be too old to live together anyway. She sounds like she could very well be stressed by the male, her own cage will solve this.

I agree with Sean. If the Male is bigger than her than I am sure she is intimidated, this especially sounds like the case when you say she will eat a little outside her cage away from him. Also a female will breed long before she is ready unfortunately I know this from experience and have a 3 year old female who is still skinny from breeding to early sometimes they never recover. I know it's a stinker to have to set up two seperte cages but it's a good idea.
