Salt crust around nostrils

ChaoticCoyote Dec 08, 2004 04:21 PM

Wizard, our mali, has had salt crusts on his nose before. Today, though, the crust completely covers one nostril, and seems extra-hard. He's otherise his usual sweet, plump self, but I'm wondering what the gentlest way is to remove the crust?

I have used a warm, moist wash cloth & wipe it off. Milo doesn't like it , but it seems to get rid of it. From what I understand they do that once in a while & its a normal thing. I'm not an expert though so don't quote me on it,

snalt, as i call it, is common and the amount that comes out of them will vary by what they take in. there must be alot of salt in san diego's water because helga and hugo always have alot of snalt the day after a soak

I've had success using a moistened Q-tip.

I am sure glad this topic came up. I just recieved a beautiful little ornate uro and I notice crust around his nostrils, I would wipe it off and it would come back.. I was starting to worry. Thinking it was some kind of respitory infection.

Does anyone know why they get this crust around their nostrils?

from what i understand, salt makes you retain water in a way that is not good and since these guys live in the desert they need all the water they can get so they release their salt content through special glands in their nose, thus getting more water to use
