question on hybernation...

herpsaremylife Dec 08, 2004 06:57 PM

ive got some baby sandiego gophers that i hatched out. they ate ravenously on pinkies and then in mid October, started stop eating. i put them into hybernation. i cut off all heat, and figure they dont need any since they arent a local too far from where i live. they are from so. cal. how long should they hybernate for? they r just babys, but they are all still meaty. i figure id let them hybernate until they naturally come out of it in spring. or end of winter, wutever. thnx in advance 4 any replys, nick.

nick, good question.......i normally do not brumate [hibernate] baby snakes unless they go off feed. this year i had several do just that in mid septemer. i have just brought them slowly back up in the last week or so, offered them smallish meals to start and they have all resumed eating. generally speaking, i give baby snakes a mini version brumation, say 45 days or so and that seems to do the trick in restarting reluctant feeders. good luck!

Nick,

There's no harm in hibernating them for 3 months, especially since they have good weight. I had non-feeding corn snakes that I cooled for 4-6 weeks only to have them eat once and then stop. It was a bit aggravating having to re-cool them again. Other people may have had different experiences - I just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.
