Repost: Flexwatt vs RHP

crtoon83 Dec 08, 2004 09:47 PM

I saw on this website where this guy was building chondro cages that they put two pieces of flexwatt - one on the top and one on the side - of the cage he built. 3/4" ply with what looked to be FRP lining (which is what mine is built out of.) Now I already ordered one RHP from pro products i'll put in with my chondro, but im thinking could I use flexwatt as a cheap alternative for my 2 black rat cages and my one (dont know whats going in there yet) cage?

Will this just cause potential problems, or will it work fine?

Thanks,
Chris

heres the website.

I guess that's the link I posted here, right?

I don't think that's the best way to go. You made cutouts in the floor, correct? Just cover the floor with something (PVC, etc.) and tape flexwatt, UTH's, or human heating pads (if you're comfortable with them) underneath.

I believe the RHP is a good choice for the GTP. Regarding the black rats, they'll be fine with an under-tank source.

I don't like the flexwatt exposed on the tops and sides with an active and curious black ratsnake.

Hope this helps.

I agree, flex should never be exposed to the animal.. Putting it in the cage is ok if it is sealed and there is a gap between the plexi or what not

Yeah, I wasn't thinking that it would work very well to have exposed flexwatt.. I just thought i'd double check and make sure.

No chris, I didn't leave any cutout under the FRP because I was planning on just getting 3 more RHP's to put up top. Could I maybe lay a heat mat down on top of the FRP that's there now and then put another piece on top of it, then the substrate? I'll probably stick with RHP's, however.

I hate flexwatt! I love the RHP's. If you want, I have 10 pieces of 11" flexwatt, (3) 3 footers and a single that you can have if you pay the shipping!

Ive been using the "Desert Rays Radiant Heat Panel" for 3 weeks so far. No problems. It supplies enough heat and does not get to temps that will burn my baby. My enclosure has glass on 3 sides, so the heatyer does have to work.
IMHO the "you need to use "XXXX for heat" is BS for chondro's.
Heat is heat.
