Advice on hatchling beardie...

JDouglas Dec 09, 2004 12:39 AM

I would like to give some info on my hatchling beardie,Lucky, to see if everything is on the right track. Lucky will be 3 weeks old on Saturday. Lucky didn't eat for the first six days after hatching. He started out eating four to five 1/4 inch crickets per day. I put Romaine lettuce cut in tiny bite size pieces in the cage every day but haven't seen him eat any yet. It dries out quickly. I started feeding him 1/2 inch tiny superworms a few days ago and he is eating about 7 a day. He is fed twice a day and with one feeding the food items are dusted with a mixture of 3 parts Reptical to one part Reptivite. He seems to be growing well. His basking spot is 102F and the cool side of his cage is 85F. Temps are taken on the surface with a temp gun. He like to hang out on his basking rock or hang upside down from the screen lid of his enclosure. I have a strip light with a uv bulb over his cage. I also have a small desk spot lamp shining on his basking spot. I have been misting him once a day but he never drinks when I mist him. He does have a shallow water bowl but I haven't seen him drink although he did crap in it LOL. I handle him once a day for about 10 minutes. He is calm when handled but freaks out when I try to catch him. He is in a room with very little noise or traffic. Much of what I have learned about beardies has been from the internet and this forum and I wanted to make sure everything was correct. Should I be soaking him and when do hatchlings ussually have their first shed? If I am doing anything incorrectly or forgetting something please let me know?

I'm not sure that he's old enough for supers yet but at least they're small. I'd jump the mistings to 3 times a day, feedings also and as many small crix as he can put down in a 10 minute period. They usually have their first shed somewhere between 3-6 weeks depending on how fast they're growing. The calcium daily is good but I'd cut the multivit down to a couple times a week. Everything else sounds good to me.

r a simulair light like that?
then it need to be very close by 12 inches not more r you have no uvb/uva left.
i also would raise temp to 110 thats better.
