Whatever turtle you get, make sure it speaks your language.

Red-eared sliders are easy, cheap, and it doesn't matter if you kill them.

Nice way to introduce someone into herpetoculture. Thinking like this will get our hobby lobbied out of existance because it makes us look inhumane. Get a clue.

...nevermind that 90% of them die anyway, or that hundreds of thousands of them are born every year, or that they are an inexpensive, fairly easy aquatic species to care for...

It really depends on what sort you want. To me water turtles (sliders and paints) are dirty and a pain. So, ones I do have live outside all summer and then get hibernated in the cellar in the winter. They need a fairly large amount of room and gallons of water once they get any size.
Tortoises take up room too but they don't have tons of stinky water.
If it were me I would put "turtle care" into the search engine and see what you get. You are bound to find something that gets your attention and isn't too hard to find, care for or expensive.

How much space, time, and money are you willing to put into caring for a turtle or tortoise? NO turtle or tortoise can live permanently in a 10 or 20 gallon tank. There is no such thing as a turtle that is easy to care for, as far as the general public is concerned.

Sliders are aquatic, and although very cheap, they get large and need a large aquarium, so they can end up costing a lot of money to profide the right care.

Try getting a book on red-eared sliders by Philippe de Vosjoli, available in many pet stores. The care the aquatic species is pretty similar, so getting a slider book will help you care for a slider, painted, map, ect.

How old is your child? Do be aware that any reptile can carry salmonella, and if your child isn't old enough to understand the importance of washing his or her hands after handling the turtle or cage, then you probably shouldn't get a reptile.
