I have a question

lilmouthy Dec 09, 2004 06:42 AM

I was wondering, how long will like meal worms, super worms keep?
The reason I'm asking,is I got my baby Collared in Aug. We live waaay out in the country with no pet stores anywhere near here. So I've just been catching crickets/other bugs for my lil guy. Well now that its getting a little chilly outside, its getting harder and harder to find them. So I've been looking here on the net for like meal worms, and so far alls i've seen them sell for is like 500 of them at a time. Well My lil guy is still small,it would take him for ever to eat that many. So I was just wondering, how long will they keep? The only other tank I have besides the 30 gallon that my lizard is in,is one of those tiny plastic ones. Its like 8"x6". So its not big enough to keep much in. Thats why I haven't ordered crickets, cause they only sell them by so many 100 and I don't have anywhere to keep them. But back years ago,I had a Gecko, and when i found meal worms at a pet store(when i lived in the city)they sold them in little tubs, and you just put the tub in the fridge, and when you wanted a meal worm you pulled it out and let it warm up then feed it to your lizard. Are the worms still sold like that, where you can keep them in the fridge?
I saw on wormman.com,they had a deal going on for 50 meal worms,50 mini super worms and 1 Viel of fruit flies for 13.95(that includes shipping)i was thinking that would be the way to go,but i just don't know how long those worms will keep.
anyhow, anybody please help me! Whats the best thing You all think I should do? I just didn't want to get a bunch of feeders and then them die cause my lil guy doesn't eat just a whole bunch. That and i don't have a place to keep a bunch of them at a time.
Anyhow thanks for all the help!!

See if this page helps you:

When my collared babies were tiny, I bought 3000 mini-mealworms, and most survived in the fridge with monthly feedings. The babies are 3 months old now and just about to finish that batch of worms. Your babe must not be as much as a pig as mine, together they are eating at least 18 crickets a day, plus the mini-meal worms. When I bought that many worms I had not yet learned here on the forum that superworms (Zophobas) are preferrred over mealworms because they are easier to digest. They have not had any problems, but it is something you should consider. I don't know about the fruit flies. I saw that special you mentioned too, but decided to go with just crickets and worms.
