Things are nuts on the home front. I am in the middle of remodeling the basement to make a new facility for the kids. Breeder wracks, new rheostats and the works. I will post picts when done. In the meantime I figured you might all like to know the little ones are well, not so little anymore. Some have hit the five inch mark and are only a little over 7 weeks old. This brood was the Oct. 26th hatching. Little surprised they haven't found homes just yet, but it's cool. Anyway this past weekend I was doing an educational birthday party for a group of 7-9 year olds. This is big daddy with us, the kids loved him, what a great monitor he is. Enjoy!!

oh ignore the fact that I am closing my eyes and in the middle of explaining about what a monitor is. My friend snapping the picts didn't seem to understand the meaning of posing hahaha

Hi JC,
Man you look sooo stoned in that pic. Hahahaha
Can you repost your substrate mixure. Seems like a lot of new sav owners are asking tons of questions.

I wasn't stoned :P hahahaha but yeah your rite I look it. This is what happens when you give the camera to someone who just snaps pictures in the middle of you blinking and talking. Oh well maybe everyone should skip the picture viewing I'll have to take another one of me with the kids so I don't look like such a fool, *grins*

Anyway soil mixture well this recipe is for a 8LX4W2D unit.

3 bags 50 lbs each of clean plain old dirt
1 bag 50 lbs of Jamaican play sand fine ( that's what my home depot labels it, it can be any childe safe play sand though, white or yellow)
1 3 cubic yard compressed peat moss
1 15 lbs bag vermiculite

mix this up thoroughly in a large bucket dry at first. Then add water slowly to get it all just well not even most but to the point ware the vermiculite and sand will help hold a cast.

Fill up your cages accordingly. If you get it rite your monitor can dig it's own burrow no problem or for the babies you can make little burrows really easy with your hands and as the stuff dries out the sand and vermiculite will help hold the den cast without you having to worry about it collapsing on itself.

ok that's what I have done seems to work well, but that's just for me. I have experimented with variations of this with the new borns, like adding some clean fresh leaves that I had saved from the fall dried and slightly crumbled from the fall. They seem to like it and makes for a good nesting material and keeps babies cleaner then on the dirt. Babies waterbowl bedding = dirty monitor
Hope this helps,
JC

Hi JC,

Are you selling your babies? Did you only get the one clutch or did your girl drop a second. I thought she had but I could be wrong. Nice to see kids these days are getting good exposure to reptiles regardless of what you look like. lol
Thanks for the picture.
