New Bearded Enclosures a few complete lol

outbackherp Dec 09, 2004 02:31 PM

Well I was bored so decided to play around with my table saw lol. They are 48"L X 24"T X 24"D, 24" strip light in each and ceramic based heat fixture in the hot end. They are made out of 3/4"HD partical board. I guess the cost to build two is about $88 bucks, I have two complete two almost complete and 4 more in the works. The sub adults just love em! I guess it helps to have about 10 years of cage building experience to play with.

Those are impressive! Do you have any type of material list/cage plans on what you used to do that etc? Thanks

Great work, you must be really handy!

for two cages you will need........

4 side pieces @ 23 1/2" x 23 1/4"

4 top and bottom pieces @ 23 1/2" x 48" these go ontop of sides

2 back pieces @ 46 1/2" x 23 1/8" these go inside of box

2 face bottom pieces @ 46 1/2" x 6" tall, inside of face

2 face top pieces @ 46 1/2" x 3" tall, inside of face

now I use aprox 1 1/4" wood screw's. You must make sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to tap the hole aprox 1/4" with a drill prior to placing wood screw's or wood will split. This is the jest of it I will e-mail you direct with some pics of what I am talking about some of the other stuff is more in depth.

wow they're really nice! if i had any idea at all on how to do that (i'm not much of a "do it yourself" kinda person) then i'd make one too!

unfortunately i don't have much money to buy a nice cage like that (i love how the lights are inside... i have a glass tank and have to constantly take off the big fixtures that i have for my big tank). i just stick with what i can get - lol

VERY nice job
where do u live & how much do u sell for?

What are you using to make them black? Spray paint?

I noticed no or little ventilation. I made some cages last year and wish I would have used peg board for the back or put some large vents in the sides. In the middle of summer it is difficult to keep my temps down in the cages because of the overall temp in the room and lack of ventilation. Something I will definately change next time and you may want to consider. They look great!

There are two vents in the top rear of each enclosure. If you look at the pic I posted you can just see them on the top inside of the right cage. Each vent is aprox 3"X12".

What kind of wood did you use? Laminated, like the material used for kitchen countertops? Or, did you just paint the wood? If you did the latter, what kind of paint is safe to use?
Very impressive structures by the way.
Thanks.

Well at first "NOW", I have gone with the paint scheme. I used a gray primer base and a Krylon gloss black topcoat.
Now as we all know with wood you can see every little pore to the wood. So next week I am going to buy a plain sheet of the melamine black without the wood and just cut it to size to cover the face and sides.
I do not paint the inside of the tanks just leave them plain. Safer for the animals that way.
