Where and What is baileyi?

niki_athena Dec 09, 2004 03:56 PM

Where is baileyi's range? Did someone breed it to look this way? What does it look like? Stubby nose with a really round body and camoflauge spots...

www.crotaphytus.de/Site6.htm; the blue in the Arizona region is baileyi.

Did someone breed it to look this way?

Not unless you count God.

baileyi was formerly considered a subspecies of Crotaphytus collaris, but currently all the subspecies are considered invalid, or at least not worth splitting into subspecies. Even if the subspecies doesn't exist in subspecies form any more, you could still consider it a "pattern class," as Grismer likes to do with other formerly-subspecific lizards in other genera. In that case, I shouldn't even be italicizing it; Grismer would probably phrase it "Baileyi pattern class of Crotaphytus collaris."

these names always confuse me, so bicinctores and vestigium don't count either?

as these are each currently recognized as their own species of Crotaphytus. The full list is as follows:

Crotaphytus antiquus
C. bicinctores
C. collaris
C. dickersonae
C. grismeri
C. insularis
C. nebrius
C. reticulatus
C. vestigium

As Chris noted, "subspecies" names such as auriceps, fuscus, etc. are no longer recognized, at least from a taxonomy standpoint... Additionally, despite persistent attempts by selected contributors to this forum, the highly prized "Crotaphytus aquaflamus" has also yet to attain full species status...LOL

I howled out loud at that remark--no disrespect to anyone on the forum, of course, but you're funny!

oh so then they are not a subspecie of collared lizards. i thought that they were
C. collaris bicinctores, etc
and the collareds were C collaris collaris
i have never really read up on it as the most scientific i get is "boogsey and muffin man"
