long move - advice needed

itsazoo Dec 09, 2004 04:15 PM

I will be moving from northern Indiana to Houston, TX (about a 19 hour drive) in July. My concern how to transport my herps. They will be in the car with me but what should I put them in? I have access to "shipping style" deli container from a friend who is a breeder. Would it work to put each of them in their own container for the trip? Should I worry about heat packs? (hard to find in the summer which is why I'm looking for info now) Or just make sure I keep the temp in the car within a certain range? Thanks for any input.

When I drove 6 hours when I was moving to go to school, I left my leo in his tank. I made sure that everything in his tank was fairly stable and wouldn't slide, and he was perfectly fine. I didn't provide heat because it was just 6 hours. Nineteen hours, on the other hand, is quite a trip! As for heat, you could use these self-warming, air-activated pads that can be purchased from www.rldtheheatsource.com.
Also, remember that breeders display their leos all day in small deli cups. That might be ok, too, if you're having trouble finding room for his tank.
Hope this helps!

I really dont recommend transporting him in a glass tank. A better choice would be a deli cup in a cardboard box or even a small cooler can hold heat well. Glass is.... well, glass. Maybe a small plastic tank, like they sell for crix?
