Thinking about using tiles...have a couple of questions

AlteredMind99 Dec 09, 2004 04:46 PM

i am thinking about switching my leo's from paper towels to tile but i have some questions.

the first one might sound really stupid but oh well. Don't the leo's have a hard time gettinga good grip and moving around on the tiles? My lizards slide all over the palce if they are out of their cage and on something smooth.

What kind of tiles should be used and how do you fasten them into place? Or do you just set them in the tank? What do they need for maintenince?

Thanks guys

Maybe I'm stupid but I've never even heared of puting reptiles on tile. As far as I know even for desert species you want some substrate that is at least somewhat absorbent and rough enough for them to get grip on. If your talking about just regelar ol' tile than it sounds like a bare tank would be pretty much the same which I KNOW is inadequate.

i use tile and my geckos have no problem getting around. They come from a region where it is hot like a desert but ROCKY, not sandy. here's a photo of my tank, and trust me, they have no problems getting around in the tank (infact they can be very quick if they want to)

I agree. Tile is the best substrate in my opinion. It's cheap, easy to clean looks natural and geckos cannot get impacted. I use the vinyl tile that is easy to cut but still looks nice. It conducts heat very well so you will need two tiles for the warm side. I just set it in, no need to attatch it.

I use tile you said it conducts heat very well and that you use 2 tiles on the warm side I am only using 1 is that ok?

I started out with one vinyl and then realized it seemed a little to hot so I added one. It really depends on how hots the uth it getting in your tank. Feel the tile with your hand it then if it feels a little to hot add another one.
