AFT sick???

jterrapin Dec 09, 2004 08:22 PM

I have a female AFT that I have had for about 3 years at least. she is usually a very healthy eater and just healthy all around. right now i am not sure what is wrong with her. she is breathing funny, and it looks like she may have some blockage in her stomach. i cant tell if she is going to the bathroom, since there is another gecko in the tank. can anyone help me? i want to help her, but dont know what to do.

What kind of substrate do you use? If its some sort of sand she could have impaction from it. I would watch her carefully and if she doesn't get better in a day or two take her to the vet.

I use carpet. i went to a vet once and she told me that sand could cause that. could you think of anything else that could be wrong? could she have eaten too many crickets maybe? i am not sure what could be the problem, and if she is impacted, what does a vet have to do to help them?

It's possible that she ate too much. Sometimes they will over eat if the food is there. If thats the case though she should be alright in a day or two. I dont think there is much you can do for impaction. Maybe she is pregnant and about to lay some eggs? Does she look fatter than normal? I would wait it out a day or two and see how she does.

no, shes not pregnant. i only have females, and one of them is a leopard gecko. i will just watch her and see if she gets any better. about a week ago, i noticed that she had shed, but she hasnt been getting all her skin off very well, and it was stuck around her nose. could that be a problem as well? i have been working on getting that dead skin of her nose in case that has made i hard for her to breath.

That shouldn't be a problem. Shedding problems could be caused by hot rocks and such which aren't recommended. My female leopard gecko has the same problem sometimes. Try misting them once in a while so its not so dry in there. She could have a respiratory sickness. In that case she would need to be tested and swabbed by the vet. This could be caused by coldness. I recommend raising the temperature in the terrarium to 85-90 degrees. Also if she breathes with her mouth open that is another sign. Good luck, I hope she gets better.

So is your AFT's cagemate a Leo? Thats what its sounds like by your post. If so you need to house them seperately, they have different requirments including humidity levels. How long have they been hosed together? Has your AFT lost weight or just not eating? I know you think the two get along fine and are doing well together but the fact is one will suffer, unseen stress will cause many problems and these two geckos will be perfectly happier living alone.

yes, she is a juvenile leopard gecko. i didnt realize they wouldnt be able to live together. i have another cage from a previous AFT. i may get that set up then and set the smaller one in there. thanks for the advise.

It's not that they can't live together because they will and may appear to get along just fine. They have diferent needs and come from different places. Stress you don't see can cause alot of problems.
