Temporary cage question????????

freakofnature Dec 09, 2004 08:35 PM

Is it possible to set up a temporary cage using a rubbermaid storage bin? This would only be for a few weeks until my custom cage is finished. If this is okay what size rubbermaid do I need to be looking for??? The boa that I am getting is a 2003 so she isnt that large yet. What would I need to do as far as heat just put a UTH under the rubbermaid?? I am open to any sugestions anyone might have thank you for any help you can offer.

If you do, be careful. A baby boa can squeeze right up and under the lid a rubbermaid thats not SUPPER secure! Make sure the little one can get off the heat (93 or so) if it wants! Most of us have at least a few animals in the 23"X16" containers, a week or two wont hurt.

For temporary cages for small boas/pythons I use the large, flat Kritter Keeper or the Exoterra Desert Den-both are the same exact cage. The hard plastic can take more heat but the main thing I like is a near escape proof lid. I put a strip of foil or duct tape over the access doors just to be sure they stay shut. An UTH pad can be laid under the cage-it has a recess for that, or attached by one side or all sides underneath the cage with foil tape-depends on your rheo, substrate, and room temp.

I have found these cages durable and handy to have around for holding new snakes or while cleaning. They last a long time if you are careful in opening the lids. Petco has the Desert Dens large size for $12.95. I just bought two of them. Bill
