nogard Dec 09, 2004 09:26 PM

My tegu has been moving around a little bit, but not every day or above the substrate, I will be going to bed, at like 3 am and I can here him moving under his substrate for a about ten minutes then I dont here him for a week or so, just wanted to know if this is normal?

thanks

He is about 4 months old about 18" tl and is a arg b/w, he eats healthy, about 20 crix, or superworms and 2 pinkies a day, until he went into (prehibernation mood?) he slowly started to decrease his food intake, I took him to a vet that the reptile center recommended and they said it was normal to do before hibernation, but the last few weeks have been a weird winter in AZ one day its a high of 55 then a few days later it a high of 78 his temps, and humidity are perfect.

I would keep a 12-14 hr light cycle and keep the temps up at night. I keep food available all the time so they can eat if they are up. When I see them basking, I offer live feeders. They may sleep more this time of year but at that young of an age they dont need to brumate especially if kept indoors.

I am no expert and would deffer to those with more experience but this is how I raise my Reds and Blues.

so how do I leave food in his cage without the crix or mealworms getting into the substrate? He doesnt seem to interested in food when I catch him out and about, he flicks at it then just burrows down, he has been like this for about a month, but hasnt lost any weight or anything, still well hydrated, and after recounting months he is about six months, i dont think it matters but I was wondering if he is small for his age
thanks

You can leave fruit, eggs, turkey... worms are ok in a bowl they cant crawl out of. I would say 18" is small for 6 months but he had a good appetite so maybe he is a slow grower. I dont do B&W so I really can't say. I can tell you my Blues are 2' at less than 4 months old and my Reds were 18" at about 2 months. Since you got him from Ron, I would shoot him an email and see what he says.
