check out the UK tortoiseTrust.com, they are big on them Meditteranancs clans...there's probably a "Hermanns.Yahoo tort-group" somewhere I suppose...

Hi Kate,

I used the tortoise trust link that Eco mentioned. Also if you do a Google search "Hermann's tortoise" you'll find good websites, like The TLady (the Tortoise Lady) website I think has a care sheet and pictures.

Things that are not in care sheets: I have my baby hermanns for less than a month and noticed that she/he likes to drink water. So a humid hide that is always warm and a little dish of water shallow enough so baby doesn't drown, is always welcome. This might be due also because we live in California where the weather is dry.

Also, hermanns shells are thinner compared to other species of torts, for example, in my experience, Greek and Chaco tortoises (which are solid as tanks).

I also notice my baby hermann tends to turn herself over, even though there's nothing that I know that can do that. So we have to check on her/him often!

The rest is similar to my other tort -Greek and follows the care for Mediterranean tort species. Warm soaking every day, herp vitamins and calcium, UV light, heat/basking lamp and heat pad under baby's enclosure, hiding place, etc.

I am also new at Hermann's tort but I hope this helps...Keep baby warm and cozy...

Good luck

Hermanns tortoises are wonderful creatures & are remarkably tough. I have a 4 year old male & a yearling that I hope will be female. She has grown from 2" to about 3" & went into hibernation for the 1st time a few days ago.

How old was she in the photo on the left? A newborn? I'd like to know how old Tina is -my baby hermann (see photo).
Thank you for sharing these great pictures, David!

She came from Gary Bright in New York & was born in July 2003 & the photo was taken in September 2003. She was about 18 month old in the right photo.

These guys have the most laid back attitudes!
