Hatching House Fly Pupae

jonpcab Dec 10, 2004 02:31 AM

Just ordered 250 House fly pupae from American Cricket Ranch. Never cared for these suckers before. About how long would you say it takes for them to hatch out and is room temperature fine for 'em?

Also, is ther a good gutload recipe out there for flies? I know they'd eat anything, but I remember somebody posting a good recipe for them a while ago. Unless I'm mistaken . . .

Anyway, thanx
Jon

They should start hatching in a few days at room temp. I ordered 500 from ACR and they never hatched - normally no probs with them. As for a gut load, people use molasses and powdered milk (I think – not entirely sure). I use one soft boiled egg, baby rice cereal, plain yogurt, and honey. I mix this all together very well. I play around with the portions until its “goopy” and will stick to side of the container I keep the flies in.

Hi Jon, Question about your fly order. Did you actually get pupae from American Cricket Ranch or the larvae as in maggots or worms? I was going to order from them but I was hoping to get the larvae.

Thanks,
Andy
