Ordering from the U.K.

loub Dec 10, 2004 06:32 AM

I was thinking about ordering some Indian Star Tortoises from this guy in the U.K.. Is there anything special I need as far as paperwork. I have an Import/Export license but need to know if there is any other requirements.

odds are the guy is going to try to ship them to you in an unmarked box.

For you to bring them in within the guidelines of the law would be very difficult or impossible.

He would need an export permit, CITES permit, Health certificate.

You would need an import permit and a USFW 3-177 form filled out.

If he does not have the required permits USFW will take them.

Won't they still check it at Customs even it is an unmarked box?

EJ Dec 10, 2004 11:11 AM

I don't know how it works if you are using Airborne or FedEx. I would think that Customs would check it but they don't check every box. I do know the shipper has to fill out a declaration form.

Thats how many of these 'CB 2 inch stars for $250' and Burmese Stars are getting in but they are starting to crack down on it.

The point is that if this guy is giving you a 'good deal' and it is almost too good to be true it probably is.

Also, If he wants to make the sale that bad... tell him to ship first. If you get the animals without a hitch... send him payment promptly.(if this is a friend of mine, he is gonna be pissed with this advice)(but I wouldn't do it any other way unless I knew the guy or he had good references)

Thanks EJ. Very helpful advice. This guy seems to be legit. He didn't request the usual wire transfer or Western Union. I'll let you know how it goes.
