I'm worried about my new leopard...

Snakemother Dec 10, 2004 07:37 AM

For the first time, I'm having a new gecko not eat for me. I know he was healthy when I got him a month ago. I have him in a ten gallon, hide on warm side and cooler, wet hide, water dish. I've upped his temps a bit, and he seems to like that, as he's laying on that side now. I've tried mealworms and crickets.
My 3 adult leopards are off feed for the winter (just like last winter), and one juvie girl is eating off and on. Her sister eats still like a pig. This guy is a juvie, about 3/4 the size of my adults. But he's lost weight not eating since I got him, and that worries me. Could it be just a witner thing, or is there something I'm not doing right, or should I get him to a vet?
Thanks!

Oh, he's really shy, too, freaks when I have to reach in his tank. So I'm trying not to freak him too much.

I would not worry about it just yet. I have had my leos for about 13 years now (since I was 10!) and I can't tell you how many times they just decided they were not hungry and went off food for weeks at a time. I would worry like crazy, take them to the vet, and simply find out that they were perfectly healthy and just not in the mood for food. Since your gecko is fairly new however, I would suggest taking a fecal sample to a good herp vet and check for parasites. More than likely, it may just be a natural reaction to the temperature dip. If the ambient air temp is low (which it might still be if you are using a UTH) his metabolism will not require him to eat as much as normal. Keep an eye on him and good luck!

If he continues to lose weight steadily, that is a definite sign that there is a problem. Until you can get him to a vet and get him eating properly again, supplement him with Vanilla (do not use any other flavor) Ensure with Calcium. They come in small cans and can be frozen in cubes in an ice tray and defrosted when needed. You can buy it at most grocery stores.
Good Luck!
