Breeding Question!!!!

jram Dec 10, 2004 07:58 AM

Hi all,
I just have a few quick questions.

1. Do females go through a pre-ovulation shed?
2. When a female is gravid, will they stop breeding even if the male tries to copulate? Or will she continue to breed despite already being gravid?
3. When she is gravid or already ovulated will she lay cool or lay heat?
4. What are sure ways of knowing a female is gravid?
Please include numbers 1-4 with each answer.
Thanks all,
Jason

1) yes there is a pre-ov shed, which averages about 8 weeks pre-ovulation, but can vary from about 5-10 weeks in the vast majority of cases...
2) usually there's a dramatic drop in breeding vigor post-ovulation, but some males try harder than others...
3) post-ov, the females seek heat...
4) sure ways: ultrasound (see the eggs); palpation (feel & count the eggs); behavior (fasting & brooding)...
Good luck!
