Has he ever actually struck at you? He may just be jerking when you first touch him because it scared him. Just regular handling should calm him down. Don't know how long you have had him but if he is a new addition he may just need some time to adjust into his new cage, can be a very stressful situation for them and the defensiveness and timidness mistakened for aggression. May also want to try using a hook getting him out of the cage, then grabbing hold of him.

Excellent advice from Steve_Ray.

Make sure his temps/humidity are right and that he has hides. Give him time to acclimate. Some retics can be jumpy. Also they have a tremendous feeding response. Do use a hook. Touch him on the nose/head with the hook every time you open the cage except at feeding. Take him out with the hook and let him crawl to you from the hook. Gentle, unrestrained handling will build trust and he should calm down. Let us know how he does-Bill.

Don't worry, it the snake is, you'll know it.
