Housing and temperature control advice...a little long

Altimaes300 Dec 10, 2004 12:42 PM

Okay, I'm including a picture of one of my "home made" enclosures. I have seperated it into 3 seperate housings because I am very male heavy and do not want to house them females due to all showing signs of breeding. They have all the basics, (including uvb that I had to move to get a descent picture). Is the space big enough though? I feel that it is but would like your opinions. Each section is roughly 18"x24"x24".

Alright, now I have roughly 600watts of electricity going on in my reptile room. During mid-day with the windows shut the rooms ambient temp reaches 90-95 degrees and the basking temps have been going into 120-125 range. (It's been cool out side since we've had this much power so I'm not sure what will happen in the Summer.) I keep the thermostat set at 65 so the temperature doesn't drop below that at night. I have 2 ac's in the house and do not think it is neccesary to purchase a seperate unit for that room. I manage the temp. by opening the 2 windows from cracks to all the way depending on the temp. outside but it's getting old. I thought about purchasing a couple of fans in the Summer, one directing in and the other directing out so there is a good airflow in the room. Has anyone tried this?

Also, has anyone housed multiple same size females together? I have several that I house 2 to a tank, but can make modifications to house more. How many is too many to one tank? I can put more than one basking site in the tank. I have a 6x2.5x2 tank that I have converted to 1/3,2/3 housing in second picture and would love to open it up and add more ladies in there. So with 15sq feet of floor space and 3-4 basing sites how many females could I comfortably house?

Hope some of this makes sence. I will enclude two pictures. The first is one of the male housings, the second is the possible conversion for multiple females. Please don't make fun of the cages I used my $20.00 jig saw, free wood from a pool table crate, and grabbed the plexiglass from dads house.

Alright.....here's the last one I'll post. It's my favorite cage, too bad the snakes are gone now! That's okay, thanks to a great guy on here I've got some Lucy's on the way to take their place!

I've never seen anyone turn such meager resources into adequate beardie housing. I think the males could probably use some more room though. The cages really aren't that bad though, besides not looking too nice. They're much cost efficient than most at least.

I'm not sure if i can really answer your questions though. My house is completely heated/air conditioned, so I hardly ever have problems with that stuff, and I only have one beardie, a male, so I'm not sure how many females would work in that tank.

What happened to the BP's by the way?

Sold the bp's for 1k.

My house has 2 ac's and thermostats, I don't want to run the a.c for the entire 2nd floor just because that room is too hot.
