aggresive male water dragon

PattySchildt Dec 10, 2004 02:15 PM

I have two adult wd's, male and female. They are housed in a nice enclosure, 8'X 7'X 3 1/2'. The male seems to be very aggresive toward the female lately, always wanting to mate. She seems very stressed out, so whenever possible I let her out of the cage and she can sit in a 7' silk ficus tree I have in their room. The room stays plenty warm and humid for her. My question is, will the male continue to be aggresive like this for long, is this a normal time of year for this, and do you think the female should be separated from him? Any insight into this from anyone will be appreciated. I hate that the female seems to have such a stressful life. Hopefully it will get better for her.

Males are pretty much always like that, so what I did was get a second female. That way the attention is split between the two dragons. Your cage is plenty big enough if you want to try adding a second female. Or, you can split the cage and give the female a break from time to time.

I have a male and a femaale in a pretty large viv (7' high, 8' wide, 4' deep). He is constantly on her to the point where she holes up in a hanging plant for days at a time. Her cone is pretty chewed up as well since he is always on the prowl.

I have been thinking about getting a second female but they are too hard to sex as babies. Therefore I would have to find a juvi that is definitely a female because I obviously do not want a second male that I have no room for.

I am wondering about the stress level of just dumping a new one in there though. I also am not sure that subjecting a second female will do that much. I think Neptune will simply go after them both whenever he is in the mood for love (which seems to be whenever he is awake).

You may want to try creating an environment where she can hang out and see him coming. My female has a hanging plant that is sized so that she can get in there but it is small enough that when he tries to get on it swings wildly and he ends up on his arse in the water (hilarious to watch BTW). That might be a simple solution to your problem.
