BRB Eye Problem

Ben_C Dec 10, 2004 04:06 PM

Hey all,
Anybody seen this before? THe snake has shed a few times since I got it and the eye caps have come off each time. However, it still appears that there is some shed left on the eyes or something (snake does not appear to be able to see very well)...any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you very much.

Ben,
...Looking at your PICs I think there is more than just the eyes involved. The scales on the head look damaged, tender and wrinkly. There is a piece of unshed skin visible there under the throat. It looks to me like the snake had some very very bad sheds or a possible infection in the past that has left the scales, including the brill over the eye damaged and wrinkly. Maybe a fungal infection? Maybe from being kept in a dirty or acidic substrate. But just a few guesses. The good news is that the snake looks like it may be past the worst of this. A good homelife with clean substrate and correct temperature and humidity and good food and your snake may look very nice after a few sheds.

Are you sure the eye caps came off?

I've seen this wrinkling of the spectacle before in some of my own animals. I've always associated it with low humidity and/or inadequate access to drinking water. The stuck shed that Jeff mentioned is also an indicator of this. After I improved conditions, the spectacles cleared up over the course of several sheds.

Flavor,
....Good info. I should have mentioned that dents and very minor wrinkling in the eyecap seem to be fairly common in Rainbow Boas. The PICs posted look more serious to me though.

Ben, did the animal have any signs of this problem when you got it? If so, do you know it's history? If not, is there a constant supply of fresh drinking water available to the snake now? Does the snake have access to a humid hidebox now? ( I used to use tupperware boxes with a hole cut in the side. I'd put some damp moss in there for humidity). If this is the same problem I've seen in my own snakes, once the water/humidity is adjusted, the condition should get better. If it doesn't, you may need to dig deeper to find out what's going on. Good luck!

Yes, the snake had this problem when I got it...it was in a completely improper enclosure so i thought i could nurse it back to health...he/she is much better now except for the eye thing...it has access to fresh drinking water and a humid box and does not use them very frequently...i force soak it a couple times a week as well...
Thank you for all of your help!
