Are Amazon Tree Boas as mean as people say they are...

I was thinking of getting one but only if I could find one that is "calm" enough to be handled without biting or striking.

Thank you

I love my corns, but I sometimes find my ATBs a refreshing change. They certainly aren't boring! I have a young one that is quite used to being handled and rarely bites, but I wouldn't say never. Most of my imports, even long term, will strike, but they are often such clumsy or half-hearted strikes that it is usually fairly easy to avoid being bitten.

If you just want an animal that isn't going to nail you everytime you try to clean the cage, then a c.b. raised one that is used to handling will probably be fine (most of the time!!). But if you are looking for a pet to carry around your neck and let friends handle, then this is probably not the species you want, in my opinion.

I dont think they are really a snake that should be handled much...i only handle mine when its necessary and she doesnt even bite that often.....mine is still small but the adults pack some hefty teeth..you'll know what hit you when they get ahold of you

In general, these are not snakes to be handled on a regular basis. Some will be calm enough to handle right off the bat, and others will learn not to continually strike at you over time, but the bottom line is that most are pretty high-strung. Forcing an ammie to be handled will only induce stress on the snake and possibly cost you some blood. However, as many will attest, you will get that 1 in 100 snake that rarely strikes and will tolerate handling. I got lucky with this big guy as he is one of the most mellow ammies I have ever met. Don't get me wrong, if he feels threatened, he will take a shot at you, but overall, he's got a great personality. Even with that said, he very rarely gets handled. If I want to have an enjoyable handling experience, I will get one of my boas or our ball python. These are guys should really be "looky no touchy"!! Billy

The ones I have seen in the wild have always been very tolerant and mellow.

Mine only bit when I was within striking distance. Other than that he was fine.
He calmed down a lot after you got him out though.
