dumb question

turtlezee Dec 10, 2004 05:57 PM

here is one for all you turtle experts! i currently keep 9 turtles in a 300 gallon stock tank(temporary). they consist of 3 redears, 3 ally snappers, 1 common snapper, 1 spiny softshell, and a mississippi map. i know this defies logic from what i have read but i can honestly say that these turtles have been together since hatchlings and with the exception of the common snatching the map a couple of times, i have had no problems. i am going to build a large pond, probably in the 1000-1200 gallon range and would like to keep them together. do you think this will work and do you think they are happy amongst each other. most are within the 7" to 8" range with the exception of the map who must be a male because he is not growing very much and is currently about 5". oh, and will this pond be large enough long term because room is not a problem, thanks

The alligator snappers are going to eat anything that moves, once they get to be large enough. They've been shown in captivity to stalk and eat other turtles from every imagineable genus.

Incredible!!! I just can't believe it! But, with either filtration or regular emptying (with a submersible pump) and refilling, this shoul be more than enough room for nine turtles.

P.S. There are no dumb questions - only dumb questioners! (JUST KIDDING!! )
