Some new...well not so new Apalachicola king pics

Sean Dec 10, 2004 09:42 PM

These pics were sent to me by David Justice whom found all of these back in the mid-late 80's to early 90s. All were scanned and cleaned up the best I could. Enjoy!

Yeah I drooled alright. From what I was told, most went to collectors. Many gravid females were kept and their offspring released where the mother was found. The interesting thing here is most of these kings were found west of the Apalachicola River...which is where I'll be spending ALOT of time next year. David told me they are more common in this area so I expect to find out for myself.

Sean! Thanks for that nice collection of pics! Great job and I appreciate it!
I have one question for you: The very last pic - Is that an appalachicola with some (possibly heavy) eastern king influence? In other words, if someone were to breed the two (eastern x appalachicola) would the offspring look something like that last pic?
Once again thanks for that wonderful collection of pics!!!
Take care and send some more whenever you get more!
Love seing those Appalachicolas - Along with my other favorite the E. kings! Good luck!

That last pic does have more of an Eastern influence. Apal. and Easterns do naturally intergrade and from what I've seen, they end up being very variable. Some offspring may look like that but expect there to be many different looks...especially as they age and whether they lighten or not.

Thanks, Sean. I was thinking about breeding my female (goini) to an Eastern wide banded male this spring and see what happens. . .And now I probably will, LOL!

Let me know if you do breed the two as I'd be very interested in seeing pics of the offspring. One thing though, you might have a hard time deciding which ones to keep as you won't really know what they look like until they grow. Some may lighten. Some may not. Either way, they should all definitely be cool no matter what.
