Bad Shed

Hsoj Dec 10, 2004 10:17 PM

I was wondering what i should do about left over shed on the toes. I've heard 2 pick it off with tweezers, but my gecko is kind of shy and skittish. I sprayed him down nice and good, should this do the job?
Just out of curiosity, what would happen if a gecko was left with shed on its toes?

Thanx

spray him down or soak his feet a lil, then you can try to rub it off. i would be careful with tweezers cuz you dont wanna injure the toe pads.

I'm going to recommend some advice that I give used when I kept snakes. When you have a bad shed, you need to remove it rather quickly because it will lead to some skin irritations. First thing you're going to want to do is give the animal a soak in shallow tepid water. Not enough water to cover his legs, just enough to cover his feet. Tepid means not hot but not cold, body (or just warmer than luke warm) temperature really. After about ten to fifteen minutes hold your gecko over your thumb so that he grasps his paws around it. And with a pair of pointed tweezers, gently remove the stuck shed from eeach toe. Don't try to pull it off if its doesn't come off. It should pull off with light pressure. You will need to soak the gecko a few times to get each foot because you'll remove the hair off the sticky pads if you remove the skin dry.

Over time, if not removed, stuck shed can lead to necrosis of the toe, which is not a good thing for arboreal geckos.

hope this helps. I would recommend having someone show you how to do this is you know anyone that has a good background with snakes.

Where are you located in the country?

Cheers

Make a humid hide (tupperware dish with entrance hole cut in the side and fill with damp spaghum moss) and put your little on in there.

Get every toe that has the old skin still stuck on it~ If the other toes are fine and went through the shed properly, then you wouldn't need to do those toes

My 7 month old crestie is also quite skittish - he'll eat from the spoon i'm holding, but if my hand comes close, he turns and runs the other way So I was also going to suggest the humid hide as well b/c that's something I would do. So far my sheds have been alright, but that's my back up
