Does anyone know what a red, whitesided bull looks like? Is this one?

sgg12899 Dec 11, 2004 01:03 AM

I produced 12 whitesided bulls this year from our triple het breeder. Het. for Red(crumbly stock), whitsides and albino. About Half the whitsides came out looking like, what I am assuming is normal, and the other half came out very peachy looking. I was wondering if anyone knows if this is just due to normal color variations in whitesided bulls or could these be whitesided red bulls. I am trying to post two photos(one of both types) on this one post. If it doesn't work I'll post them in follow-up post.

I am not really sure what you have there, the first pic looks like a good trumbower line whitesided, bu the second looks like a bell line whiteside but it has some wierd loking markings in the upper portion of the white. As the other poster remarked that the red lines (crumby) are a neat but unpredictable trait that we do not completely understand right now and I agree with him that it is going to take several years to fiqure out what we do not know. You making the comment that there is also albino, white sided genes etc. in the line you are working with indicates they are out of the trumbower line from when he was chasing the first snow (albino whitesided) years ago.

Good luck and I would love to see some pics as they age.

I would say that it is on its way there! The inheritance of the red coloration is more complicated than just being a simple recessive trait. It is going to take years of line breeding to develope a true red whiteside. I am currently working on this project. You can visit my website under the "special projects" and read about my breeding program and see pics of my breeders. The pic below is of a male het whiteside held back from my wild caught red females line. Great job on your whitesides! Take care!

Here a pic a good friend (Don Soderburg - South Mountain Reptiles)sent me of the comparison of what I consider a typical trumbower white sided and a dark example of the bell line white sided.

Quite a difference between the two.

Here is a close up of another white sided trumbower that shows the color a little better. They also come in a hypo which looks a lot like your animal.

That most definitely looks like a whitesided bull to me. As it grows, the yellow usually fades.
