Heating pad

tim5580 Dec 11, 2004 01:36 AM

If I put the heat pad on the floor of a wood cage, can I use a piece of thin wood or vinyl flooring overtop it or do you think it would be better to put it on the roof? I plan on buying a proheat pad eventually, but all I have for now is a cobra heat mat.

More I think about it though, I hate to not use my CHE, since I already have it, and it provides adequate heat. But my mom said she would buy me an aquarium for christmas, and I told her I'd be better off probably with a wood one, but she said she would buy a big one if I need it. But she won't get me a boaphile, vision, or neodesha cage though.

Do not mount a cobra heat pad on the ceiling. They are not like a Proproducts Radiant Heat Panel that are designed to direct heat downwards.

You can place a Cobra mat on the floor of a cage and laminate vinyl flooring over it. However, it's not my favorite application.

Insteadn cut a large hole out of the bottom of the cage that is 2" wider and longer than the size of your pad. Then place vinyl flooring or expanded PVC over the entire floor. The heat pad can then be attached underneath to the floor and have a nice air space. MUCH SAFER.

Also route or chisel a groove for the cord.

Be CHE you mean ceramic heat emitter, correct? You don't mean something like "Cobra Heating Element"? I'm just asking since in your first post it seems like you only have a Cobra Heat Pad.

If it is a ceramic heat emitter these are very nice and very versatile. They need to be used from above.

Try to talk her into something other than an aquarium for a snake. Tell her they are not as secure and hard to clean, typically.

I was thinkng of putting in a space below the floor, so I could run a heat mat or some heat tape below the floor. I keep seeing heat tape for real cheap compared to a proheat pad. Not that I wouldnt like a proheat pad, but I am running short on cash, cause it is the holidays and my boss decides not to work me.
I figured it wouldn't be too hard to do that, get a piece of plastic floor stuff, put a piece around the outside edge and and across the middle for support, and just lay it on top of the wood bottom. I could hide it behind the litter dam so noone would know.

Oh yeah I meant ceramic heat emitter.

If you already have a ceramic heat emitter AND a Cobra Heat Pad there's no reason for you to spend any money unless you need a fixture, rheostat or thermostat.

You're only heating one or two cages, correct?

I forgot what you're trying to accomplish.

I have a cobra heat pad 6x11, not using it because it doesn't throw off enough heat for a 20g long. I have a 60 and a 100W heat emitter. I wanted to use a proheat pad or flexwatt or any heat tape for this cage because I couldn't think of an easy way to have a ceramic heat emitter in there, and my current heatpad is too weak for a 4x2x1 (size I plan on building). So I was looking at using a proheat or heat tape as an easy solution. I wouldn't mind using heat tape until I could afford a proheat or maybe use heat tape as a permenant solution.

They make guards for ceramic heat emitters and other heat bulbs.

It's very easy to mount one to the ceiling of a plywood cage and cover it with one of these guards.

Post a separate thread with "mounting a che" in the title (or something similar) and see if anyone has pics.

Don't get me wrong, a RHP is a great way to heat any snake cage, but if you're strapped for cash use the CHE's for how.

Flex Watt may work for a large cage but not if it sits in a fairly cool room.

I keep the room about 72F. Heater kicks on in there if it drops below 70F.
