Differences between Common and Florida Snappers

EricIvins Dec 11, 2004 11:57 AM

I just bought a Snapper last night. It was labled as a Florida Snapper, but was sold to me as a Common Snapper. What are the main differences between the two morphologically? I believe it to be a common, but I want to be sure. I have been looking around, but so far havn't found a decent comparision between the two

Florida snappers are a subspecies of the common snapping turtle. There are a couple of these subspecies (i.e. Northern, Florida, etc.) and each is a little different. However, the care is pretty similar among all of them. Hope that helps.

The Florida sub-species (Chelydra s. osceola) tends to be smaller than the northern counterpart. The wild specimens are less tolerable to cold weather, and the tubercles on the neck are longer, and more pointed than C.s.serpentina...other than that, they are basically the same turtle.
