temp range for three toed boxies

valerie Jul 02, 2003 01:24 PM

First off i live in Edmonton, ALberta Canada and i'm wondering what temp my three toed boxie can take at night. I want to keep her outside in her pen over night but it gets down to about 10* celcius some nights(even thought its summer. Durign the day its 20-30* celcius. I want to leave her outside since it would be better for her but is that too cold? WHat range of temps can they take?

I have been keeping her inside in the past and can control the temp so she is used to have constant higher temps(75-80).

So will she be ok being left outside over night?

That is too cold at night for a Three-toed box turtle. And it probably doesn't get warm, LONG enough during the day for her to reach a proper core body temp which is likely about 78 degrees for Three-toeds.
If it was me, I would take her outside when the temps reached 70 and bring her back indoors when the temps lowers to 65.

Thanks, I thought it was too cold. I have been taking her outside after lunch and bring her back in after supper. It has been about ranging about 20-25* celcius during the days so is that good enough?

Man i hate living where it is colder,Even our summers aren't good enough for turtles.Anyone else from canada keeping boxies?

there's one canadian on here I know of that keeps and breeds boxies and has for a few years now. He does it totally indoors, but he spent a fortune setting up a huge zoo quality display with water works and lighting and such. Climate can really be a drag sometimes with chelonians. I'd love to keep an aldabra, but since I do have somewhat of a winter, and I don't have a heated solarium or greenhouse, that's a no go. I can't realistically keep desert species because of the humidity...
