Soaking my Agama?

schizmsgrl Dec 11, 2004 03:36 PM

Me again!! Sorry to keep buggin yas, but I have to ask a question that I posted the other day under my "lizard Mites" post....Nobody has replied to it, so I am not sure if anyone that could answer my questions read it or not. Or maybe ur jus sick of me and my dumb questions...lol

However, I would like to know if I am able to give my Agama Agama a bath in the sink (I wouldnt put her in the tub because she is not all that big yet). I do not know if Agamas like to soak in the water. Plus I am still trying to rid her of those chiggers (I have been using reptile relief)...Any input would be greatly appreciated as I am still trying to learn all the ropes of owning a Lizard.

Thanks again!! ~Schiz~

I'll answer! Sorry you got no reply. I throw my Agama Agamas in the water all the time. Just make sure it's not cold water or piping hot. I don't use a thermometer but I'd guess that lukewarm would be a good description. Don't leave them in too long but a dip is just fine. And most lizards can swim so the tub is probably ok as long as you watch them to make sure they don't dive. I usually use a bowl so they can touch the bottom and stand. Hope this helps.

Ahh, thanks for the quick reply Mike, I certainly appreciate it! I am curious to see how she will react to the water!

Oh yeah, I did have another question now that I think of it....She RARELY will drink water out of her water dish, but she likes to drink it from my finger tip. I am worried that she is gonna dehydrate herself bye not drinking enough. I dip my finger in the water bowl, and she likes to suck it off my fingertip, but it dont seem that is enough water. I am thinking that maybe she doesnt require alot of water....?

I have tried and tried to get her to drink by placing her next to her water bowl, but it doesnt seem to work...Any Ideas? lol

Thanks, ~Schiz~

It should work, are you spraying it on her then wiping like the directions say?

You can also spray her tank, according to directions and then wipe.

I personally until I erradicated these buggers would use paper towels on the bottom of her tank after treating it. And change the towel everyday.
It will be easier and help get rid of them , than using the sand and leaving sand in there. Easier to spot them also.

Also when they die they are just stuck on them, some fall off. But some you see may be dead. And yes you can see them under scales. The reptile relief should work.

The thing I said below in a post was you could use olive oil in the areas you see them , to SMOTHER them.
Ans YES you can use cooking oil , same thing.

Just oil the heck out of the bugs. The oil will not hurt your lizard. Just make her SLIPPERY, hhehehehhehehe LOL

Hope it helps your girl, let us know.

Ahh, Yes thanks Eve!! The reptile relief worked, and we gave her a soak in the tub!! LOL what a riot! It was her first time in the water, at first she really freaked out, but then she really seemed to enjoy just relaxing in the water! Sooo cute!

I did notice that some of the little "suckers" came off in the water, but there were still alot stuck on her, so my daughter and I layed out a towel and put her on it, and spent at least an hour or more plucking those nasty bugs off with tweezers!!! Woa, what a job!!! They really cling on there even after they are dead!!! However, we did get most of them...Some of the smaller ones are still on her, but I do plan on giving her another soak today too see if we can get the rest off.

She is such a sweetie lizard, she lets us lay her on her back as we used tweezers to get the ones off her belly! What a sight, jus like a little baby! I swear she knew we were helping her.

The paper towel idea sounds great, I am gonna try that instead of putting her sand back in just yet.

I would however like to know how often I can/should soak her in the tub?? She really seemed to like it once she got used to it.
And it made her little pointy scales look kinda "fluffy", like they were sticking up more than usual after her bath. Almost like they grew. lol

After she was out of the tub, warmed up and dryed off, I was holding her in my hand, looked down, and the top of her nose and both her cheeks had turned this cool greenish blue color!! It was so pretty! What does tht mean do you know? lol
I have never seen her head turn red like they claim agamas do, but she has turned this bluish green color one other time when I had been holding her in my hand for a while... I hope that means she is happy!!!!

Thanks again! This site is great, I am addicted!!

As far as soaking her if she likes it, I don't see why once a week would hurt her. Guess thats up to you, as long as shes dried well.

And I know their colors change when they are stressed, and different temps will make them change, and BREEDING season makes then brighter.

You can talk with Mike about that he has a couple he answered you above this post! Nice guy! Loves those redheads, heheheheh

Your girl does sound very cute, gee wish we could see her pic, LOL

My wife's been doing Christmas cards on the computer and had it all tied up. Thanks Eve for stepping in! But I'm back with pics. First of all, I had male and female backwards. This is a picture of my "female." And it was sold to me as a sub adult but she's pretty darn big. Picture of the male on next thread......

What a show off. And I know what you're saying about these guys. They have become my favorite lizards.

Thank you so much Mike, boy they do get rather large huh? lol
I am all new to owning a lizard (I think I have been missin out). I spend more time watching her than I do T.V.!

Anyhow, her markings appear to be alot different than the markings on yours, but yet she is just a baby from what I was told, when we bought her her body was as long as my index finger(about 2 1/2 inches, not including her tail of course).... She was also very skinny.

We have finally found the charger for our digi cam, and if everything works out I plan on posting some pics of her tonight, and perhaps you could lemme know what ya think! And of course you also Eve!!!

Thanks again, you guys are great!! take care!! ~SchizZzz~
