What to do with Southern Grey Tree Frog

maggie4157 Dec 11, 2004 07:25 PM

I brought in my plants last month and last night I discovered a Southern Grey Tree Frog in one of them. What should I do with it. I'm afraid it's too cold to put it back in the woods. I don't really have a place to keep it, but I can set up something temporary. I did buy some crickets for it to eat. What else should I do? Please Help. Any information you can give me would be appreciated. I live in southern NJ.

Yes, good call on your part for not releasing it back during this time of the year. You can keep it until the Spring and then release it. However, what kind of temporary enclosure are you planning for it? Grey tree frogs are pretty small frogs, and even a small, well-ventilated enclosure (that is sealed sufficiently so no escapes are possible) would suit it fine (a 5 gallon or 10 gallon shoebox/tank would be great). Along with the enclosure it should be kept at room temperature (around 70 degrees), receive clean, dechlorinated water, a substrate of unbleached paper towels, food and maybe a daily misting. It should do fine if these needs are met.

Thanks so much for your help. Now that I know I'll be keeping it until spring, could you tell me how often to feed it? Are the crickets I bought the right thing to feed it? I had set a plastic shoe box up like you suggested and also put in a couple of branchs...It likes to hide between them. Again, thanks for the help.

get a 10 gallon with screen top, cover half with plastic wrap to keep in humidity, humidity needs to be around 60-70% for greys. temps can flucuate from 50s to low eighties but 70's being the best. feed it two to four appropriate sized crickets every 2-4 days. The crickets should not be bigger than the frogs head is wide. you can use paper towels for the bottom of tank, make sure they are damp with de-chlorinated water, and a small, shallow water dish. change paper towels once a week or when dirtied. good luck and i hope you still plan to release it in the spring.

I can't thank you enough for all the help. I did put in the water and there are 6 crickets in with it. So far so good. It seems to be OK. Yes, I am going to release it in the Spring...Just hope I can keep it alive and well that long. Again, thanks for the help.
