how do you tell if paint or finish is toxic?

britbiker Dec 11, 2004 08:14 PM

I've been inspired by the cages I've seen on the forum to build a new cage for my beardies. My question is: you're not supposed to use any paints, finishes or glues that are toxic to dragons. Question is: how do you tell what's toxic and what's not?
Thanks.

Well depending on what type of wood you use I would not paint the inside of the cage at all, I would either use melamine sheet to cover it or just leave it bare. Outside of the tank is fine to paint.

I'm no expert but I disagree with a bare wooden cage as all wood will soak up liquids to a certain degree. if you browze through the forum under cage and habitat design here http://forums.kingsnake.com/forum.php?catid=4
you will find a lot of good ideas for non-toxic paints and finishes.
