Large Burm Cage...Vision vs Boaphile vs Animal Plastics...

ryjspahr Dec 11, 2004 09:05 PM

So I have a large albino female pushing 14 feet and 100 lbs and its time for her to move into a new cage. I am a retard when it comes to builing things, so I figure I have between $500-600 to spend on a nice new cage... what company would you all recommend going with?

I am considering the following three cage manufacturers:

Vision - I love there cages for smaller snakes, but would there new 6 foot model hold up well?

Boaphile - everything looks great, but have no experience with them.

Animal Plastics - again, looks great... but haven't found many people that have actually delt with them?

Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Ryan Spahr

For a 14 foot snake your going to need a cage at least 8'x3'x3', and from my earlier research of those sites most dont make cages that big, or will offer custom cages which you will most likely be spending over $500 on not including the shipping. I have no knowledge of constructing cages, but I do know that if you have the right tools or resources, its cheaper making your own or having someone with the knowledge make one for you. Also, if you order an already made cage, get ready to wait at least 4 weeks for it, probably longer, maybe even closer to 2 months.

I purchased a monster cage. No frills. I'm heating and lighting it myself. Heat is a Pro Prducts RHP.
The cage is 96" X 30" x18"high.
RHP was 160$...Cage was $565 shipped.
Problem is...it's been two months since I placed my order, and I've yet to see my cage.
If you want to order a cage, you need to order 6 months before you get into herps. Otherwise you're SOL.
Good Luck.
Note...the other cage manufacturers are'nt much better with delivery if you read the fauna BOI on cages.

I saw that vision is going to be coming out with a 72x28 cage for 300 shipped....its too small for the big burms but for some smaller males would be good...and that is a really good price i think. I usually just build my own but i may end up buying one of those. There cages look like they have a little more thought put into them then everyone else

I have a 6ft vision cage, that right now houses a baby retic, and an animal plastic cage that is 6ft that houses my burm. I would agree with the post above that your burm is to big for both of these.
The animal plastic one I bought last year after X-mas and they had a sale on there cages and the shipping prices was not bad. I like that cage because you can get the heat thing on one side and the light on the other, holds humididty awsome as well. Plus there customer service was awsome, we had questions after they where closed and the guy gave us his cell number if we had questions.
Vision on the other hand from everyone that has had to deal with them say they are horrible. I am lucky because a pet store in my state carries them and tells me about them. I like vision cages but when I wanted one shipped it almost was as much as the cage. And I think the one you are talking about for $300 does not have a place to put a light, not sure though.
Your other option is to see what shows are going to be in your area and look up who will be there and get one there.

Good Luck
Jeff

I AGREE WITH EVERYONE, SNAKE TOO BIG FOR THESE CAGES. I HAVE FOUR SIX FOOT VISIONS FOR SOME BIG GUYS, AND THEN I HAVE A MIX OF SMALLER VISIONS AND PRECISIONS FOR MY HOTS. BACK TO THE BIG SNAKES, FIND A LOCAL HANDY MAN AND TELL HIM YOU ARE INTERESTED IN GETTING A SNAKE CAGE BUILT, THIS WAY YOU CAN DESIGN THE WHOLE THING, HEIGHT, SHAPE, LIGHTS, HEAT ECT.ECT. I HAD A MAN BUILD ME A 10LX4HX4W ENCLOSURE. THAT WAS FIVE YEARS AGO AND THE CAGE IS STILL PERFECT. I USED TILES FROM HOME DEPOT FOR THE BOTTOM AND COVER THOSE WITH THE CAGE LINERS FROM DCL(CHECK CLASSIFIDES) HOPE THIS HELPES, I GOT WHAT I WANTED FOR A LOT LESS MONEY. JASON

Bob Clark him self keeps HUGE burms in 6 foot cages. As long as you just get them out and excercise them its fine. I have 2 Visions, model 632. 6x3x18. And I love them. They rock, easy to heat etc... I found them on the classifieds for like 250 a piece, can't beat that. I didn't even have to pay shipping, guy lived near by.

Anyways, everyone is entitled to thier own opinion, but a 14 foot burm will be fine as long as you have a 6x3, no shallower then 3.

i have talked, in person, to the the animal plastics people at the tinley park show and they told me that thier T25 and T50 cages are suficient for large burms. they have alot of nice features that will help make it easier to clean, heat and keep up humidity. the only thing that i have heard from vision cages is that they are not as strong and will bow with larger snakes, and this makes it difficult to stack, but i have no experience with vision and this was on their older cage. also AP cages can come to your door broken down so you can put them together, this helps with shipping. i thought that shipping to my house was around 100 bucks for 2 T25's and one T50. and it would have been to my house in about 2 weeks. just my two cents.

HE IS TALKING ABOUT A 14 FOOT BURM. WE ALL KNOW THAT IT WILL NOT STAY 14 FOOT IF FED PROPERLY. ABOUT BOB CLARK, WELL THESE ARE NOT PETS BUT RATHER PROFIT, HE HAS TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF HIS SPACE. YOU ARE LOOKING AT 500$ CAGES THAT A 18 FOOT BURM CAN DO NOTHING BUT CURL UP IN. THINK OF THE FUTURE BEFOR YOU SPEND THAT KIND OF MONEY. AGAIN, BUILD YOUR OWN OR FIND SOMEONE TO DO IT FOR YOU. YOU WILL SAVE MONEY AND YOUR SNAKE WILL ENJOY THE EXTRA ROOM.

the animal plastics T50 cage is a 7 foot cage. though it is not a monster of a cage, this should house most adult burms. many people will house thier adult retics in these cages which are much more active. plastic and acrilic cages will hold in heat and humidity much better and eadier than wood or glass cages.

p.s. burmaboy let us know how the monster cage works out.

jojay327 Dec 13, 2004 02:00 PM

what is the width of this animal plastics cage you are talking about, I don't know much about them but they don't look stackable, are they? maybe they will be fine for most burms, however my seven year old female would not even be able to thermoregulate in a six foot vision, send me your email and you tell me if you would feel comfortable putting this burm in a six foot cage.

Where do you live? Maybe I can build your cage.? I built my burm a pretty nice cage(surprised myself. Its 7Lx33"Wx40"T. My burm is 9' but he will fit in there perfect when he is grown. I also put in a pond about 20" in diameter with a pump that keeps water flowing to up the humidity. The cage is wood with plexiglass front. Opens from the front, 2 big doors. The full cage stans six feet tall but the bottom of cage is like 2.5 feet off the ground. I have a ceramic heater in there for most of the heat. I think I paid about $400 for all of it including the little pond, pump, ceramic heater. My advice though is definately dont get anything smaller than 7Lx2 1/2W.
