Uros and Beardeds in same set-up??

stilltraining Dec 11, 2004 10:51 PM

Hey everyone. I've been interested in getting an Uro or 2 for a few months now, and with the new enviro I'm setting up, I feel it may be the perfect time. I have a 6'x3' cage that I'll be putting 2 bearded dragons in soon, and was thinking of addign a Uro or 2 to the mix, and possibly even a small desert snake, like a kenyan sand boa later. I wanna try and get a couple dessert creatures in it, so I have a nice mix, but I wanna make sure they co-exist fine. Has anybody ever done anything like this before? how did it work out?

Well, I read what other people have said...is it really that bad an idea? The cage is big enough to house a full grown ball python with room to move around...and bigger than I've seen people put full grown red-tails and burms into! The cage would have hiding spots, as well as different basking levels allowing the animals the preferances they desire. I'd probly have a 100 or 150 watt over one side, and a 75 or 100 on the other. If despite that set-up it's still a general consensis(sp?) that it's a bad, I'll probly just end up putting in a divider when I get the uros.

It really is much better to house them seperately. By housing them together you are going to be comprimising some aspect of husbandry for one or both of the species. Plus there is a very good chance that they'll fight, they're tactics are sort of not suited for fighting with each other. A lot of times a bearded dragon will try to go for the tail, and you know what a uro's tail does. Sometimes it can really hurt. Trust me...my uro wedged herself in between the wall and a bookshelf and I went to get her out, but I startled her and she let me have it with that tail. I decided after that that I was better off moving the shelf (it wasn't that big).

Uros and beardies are very active animals, unlike snakes. They need a lot more room for their size than a snake does for its size.

Diet, heating and substrate different. Even if divided the cage would be a pain in the butt to clean. Snakes are not a good idea to mix with lizards under no curtcumstances. Only lizard i heard that would be ok with Malis is a sandfish but then again they are insectivores so... JUst get one or the other. You can fit a nice group of beardies in that cage.PLus for that size enclosure ull need more than a 1 75 watt. Each dragon should have its own basking spot plus uv is exspesive if lighted properly.Good luck
