New gecko; sexing and age.

danot2serious1 Dec 11, 2004 11:48 PM

I just got another reptile to add to my collection. First gecko. I got him at the Northrn VA rep. expo yesterday. I got him (or her...) off a breeder but he was preety busy so I didn't ask him any questions. Beautiful gecko, I think I'm eventually breed this gecko, so I need to know the sex. I'd like an estimate on it's age too, I have no experience with geckos. I know it's probably too young to sex but guesses are appreciated

Way too young to properly sex... but if I were to venture a guess.... male. call it 60-65% chance. I think I can see the beginning of pores as well as two bulges... but like I said, it's early.
I'd say it a few months old.

My guess for what it's worth is male too

too young, but i'd put it about 75% male. Needs a little more fat too, but think I can see the begining of some bulges @ base of the tail. Can really tell how big he is from the pic, but I'd guess no more than 4 months or so. 5 if he's nutri deprived

Yeah I know, I feed him today, chowed those crikets down! He's been eating his calcium and d3 supplements so he's on the way to being a healthy adult. I bought him because he looked a little skinny, and he's beautiful. Only 20 bucks for him. I went to the show just to look but my $25 was burnin a hole in my pocket. I left with 26 cents. Is he a tremper albino?

PS, How long till he can breed? Till he is a nice, full-bodied adult?

geckogrl6 Dec 12, 2004 11:38 PM

i'd say more than likely tremper, but im not the best w/albino strains. could be wrong. I wouldn't recommend breeding this season. he needs to build up his strength. next spring if it is a he. if it turns out female (doubtful), I'd wait an extra year. most important is weight. do some reading please before you breed.

Well, I knew all that. I meant how long after he's full grown and has some meat on his bones. I've bred balls, it's nothing new to me. I'm going to breed leo's next season.

sorry, didn't get the ? I guess. Leos are sexually mature and able to breed often before they really should be. sometime between 1-2 yrs old, males can be bred as soon as they reach the right size. Weight and length are really the deciding facors, not so much chronological age. does that answer it? just make sure the female is ready.

Sorry about the confusing question, I really appreciate your reply. I'm going to buy some adult females and build them up for a while to breed next season. In the mean time i'll be raising my cricket colony.

Ok haven't posted in a long while, like my pic on the forum (gecko in the chair)? LOL

Anyway saw your post, I was at the show. So I decided to reply, Looks to me to be tremper, honestly I’m pretty sure at least 90% sure you have a female. You guy don’t rely on bulges alone, you need to look for the pores and I don’t see any at all. Females can have fatty bumps down by their tail that resembles male parts, I have had several females that have looked like males, I also have pics if you want to see. Also males can breed when ever they are ready to go, some as young as 2 months. So make sure you always keep the males and females separated as soon as you can tell the sex. If you want I can sex your gecko in person. But again on the pics I’m sure you have a little girl. If you don’t mind me asking who did you get her from? What table? I do agree with the others she is a tad thin. I do remember seeing someone with some thin geckos there; I'm pretty sure who you got her from. If you have anymore questions or if you need help with anything, feel free to email me.

Very cute gecko you got there, lol.

I don't know his name but it was the guy at the table right next to the guy with the hissing cockroaches. He had most of his geckos in solo cups. He had a big Dumeril boa, water dragons, tortosies and a lot of emperor scorpions under blacklight. Were you a vendor?
Yeah I knew she(he...) was thin and that's one reason I got her, needs to be fed some more so she can produce some beautiful offspring. I'm in no rush to sex it, just curious at the moment. I do have to raise some mates for it though. Any suggestions on breeding crosses?

Was it the guy also selling the crickets there? You may want to get a fecal done on her. If you want to hear more about this guy please email me. Also if it is the guy I’m thinking I’d quarantine for at least 90 days.

I wasn’t a vendor this time, I only came to look around and buy a few things. I was a vendor there in the past though and I plan on being one there again maybe during the summer. As for crossing her sometime later, how about crossing to a Super Hypo Tang? Make your own tangerine albinos? Or you could just work more with albinos if you want, you could also make your own Tremper PA take about 3 generations or so but your work will pay off by crossing them on your own.

danot2serious1 Dec 14, 2004 02:30 PM

The guy at the table right next to the guy with the hissing cockroaches, at the back. He had most of his geckos in solo cups. He had a big Dumeril boa, water dragons, tortosies and a lot of emperor scorpions under blacklight.
