lizardboy696969 Jul 02, 2003 02:08 PM

I recently bought a texas banded gecko from my local pet store. But they sold it to me as a Texas banded LEOPARD gecko but i am pretty sure that it is only a Texas banded gecko. I am trying to return it but they say it is what they call it. If anybody can give me info to prove them wrong please do. Thankyou for ALL your help

Well, if they labeled it a TEXAS banded leopard gecko, that should have turned you off right there. Leopard geckos dont come from texas, so really you should've known when you bought it that it wasnt a real leopard gecko. Any caresheet on leos will usually say where leos are indigenious too, and Texas definantly isnt one. This might sound harsh, but its the truth.

why do you want to return it anyway? is it ill or was it just that you wanted a leo rather than a banded? I don't want this to come off sounding the wrong way but... if you didn't even know what a real leo LOOKS like, there are probably a number of other things about the care of leos that you do not know. Don't buy ANY herp (or any animal for that matter) if you do not know how to properly identify and care for it. these beautiful guys can live for up to twenty years with proper care. be sure that you know what you're getting in for! as for educating the pet store, just type in Texas banded gecko into a search engine, get a picture, then type leopard gecko in, get a picture of that and compare. the two species look dissimilar enough that there shouldn't be any confusion even with the most obtuse of pet shop people. hope this helps!

Anyway...you have the animal, why not keep it? Do some research on the bandeds and give the lil guy the best setup you can make for him. Don't send him back because you didn't know how to distinguish a leo from a banded and the petstore mislabeled his species...its unfair to put the poor thing through all that stress of moving again.
RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!!! You owe it to the animal to know what you are doing before you take its life in your hands!!!

I agree...Texas bandeds are precious creatures, they look like baby leos that retain the stripes, if a bit washed out. They do the tail-twitching thing as adults, while most leos stop as they get older. They're really adoreable, and a 10 gal is plenty of space, though they do eat 1/3 inch cricks throughout their life. I'd call it lucky and keep the little guy. Care requirements are almost identical, though scaled down for their smaller size.
